Invisible gastric carcinoma detected by random biopsy: long-term results after photodynamic therapy
2008
Background and study aims Gastric cancer diagnosed from routine gastric biopsies without any evidence of a visible lesion and negative repeated biopsies is an infrequent but serious clinical problem for which gastrectomy has usually been recommended, even if operative specimens do not show cancer either. We report on a series of 22 such patients undergoing long-term follow-up after attempted treatment with photodynamic therapy (PDT). Patients and methods 22 patients with invisible gastric cancer (IGC) who presented during a 10-year period (10 men, mean age 56 +/- 15 years) were prospectively included. Initial histopathological findings confirmed by second opinion included 10 well-differenti…
Oncobox, gene expression-based second opinion system for predicting response to treatment in advanced solid tumors.
2019
e13143 Background: Anticancer Targeted Drugs (ATDs) specifically target one or a few types of tumor-related molecules in a cell. More than two hundred of ATDs were approved worldwide. They have different mechanisms of action and are effective for different cohorts of patients. However, many individual cases remain poorly responsive and it is of great importance to identify predictive markers of ATD efficacy. Our aim was to develop a platform enabling smart selection of the most efficient ATD therapies. Methods: We generated a second-opinion platform for clinical oncologists termed Oncobox. It is based on the analysis of gene expression profile of a cancer sample in comparison with the corr…
Selbstorganisierende neuronale Netze zur automatischen Detektion und Klassifikation von Kontrast(mittel)-verstärkten Läsionen in der dynamischen MR-M…
2005
Purpose: Investigation and statistical evaluation of "Self-Organizing Maps," a special type of neural networks in the field of artificial intelligence, classifying contrast enhancing lesions in dynamic MR-mammography. Material and Methods: 176 investigations with proven histology after core biopsy or operation were randomly divided into two groups. Several Self-Organizing Maps were trained by investigations of the first group to detect and classify contrast enhancing lesions in dynamic MR-mammography. Each single pixel's signal/time curve of all patients within the second group was analyzed by the Self-Organizing Maps. The likelihood of malignancy was visualized by color overlays on the MR-…

Agreement on the charges for staying at a nursing home in the case law of administrative courtsThis paper is devoted to the issue of concluding an agreement on the charges for staying at a nursing home in the case law of administrative courts. The debated issue is based on a very extensive case law and against this background the most important problems are discussed. The first problem concerns the sources and forms of participation in the cost of maintaining a person in a social welfare home. In the case law of administrative courts a prevailing view is that law is the source. Other opinion says that the source is an administrative decision. The second opinion cannot be accepted. The views…
Reassessing Accuracy Rates of Median Decisions
2007
We show how Bruno de Finetti''s fundamental theorem of prevision has computable applications in statistical problems that involve only partial information. Specifically, we assess accuracy rates for median decision procedures used in the radiological diagnosis of asbestosis. Conditional exchangeability of individual radiologists'' diagnoses is recognized as more appropriate than independence which is commonly presumed. The FTP yields coherent bounds on probabilities of interest when available information is insufficient to determine a complete distribution. Further assertions that are natural to the problem motivate a partial ordering of conditional probabilities, extending the computation …
A Teledentistry system for the second opinion
2014
In this paper we present a Teledentistry system aimed to the Second Opinion task. It make use of a particular camera called intra-oral camera, also called dental camera, in order to perform the photo shooting and real-time video of the inner part of the mouth. The pictures acquired by the Operator with such a device are sent to the Oral Medicine Expert (OME) by means of a current File Transfer Protocol (FTP) service and the real-time video is channeled into a video streaming thanks to the VideoLan client/server (VLC) application. It is composed by a HTML5 web-pages generated by PHP and allows to perform the Second Opinion both when Operator and OME are logged and when one of them is offline.
Teleradiologie nach Röntgenverordnung - beispielhafte Anwendung der Open-Source-Software SecTelMed
2005
Purpose: Establishing a teleradiology connection according to the Rontgenverordnung (RoV) between a peripheral hospital and a university clinic will contribute to improve the radiological emergency treatment on weekends, holidays and at night. It will also better the medical care for patients and help to lower the costs. Materials and Methods: By using the open source software SecTelMed, the radiological picture is transferred via an internet-linked SSH communication server. The integration of the teleradiological data transfer into the actual workflow is attained by using the already existing PACS infrastructure. While its installation is still under construction, it is actually employed f…
